A functional behavior assessment allows us to identify why behaviors are occurring. The analysis includes understanding the triggers of behaviors (i.e., What happens before a behavior occurs), as well as the consequences shaping behaviors and causing them to continue (i.e., Reinforcing the behaviors). This detailed and data based analysis of the context in which behaviors are occurring allows the development of targeted, effective interventions and recommendations.
The assessment is conducted by a BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst), Assessment dates will be subject to the BCBA's availability, but typically take place within two weeks of the initial referral.
The assessment may take 2-4 hours depending on the severity of behavior problems, and the environment in which they are occurring.
The assessment consists of an observation of the behavior problems in the environment in which they occur (i.e., School or home), with the people who the behaviors are occurring with.
This observation may take 2 to 4 hours depending on the severity of the behaviors and their complexity.
A comprehensive report outline triggers for behavior problems as well as the function of behaviors (i.e., Why behaviors occur), as well as recommendations for next steps is provided to families and schools. A meeting will be set up with the family and/or school to review the assessment findings.
